GGP Episode 17: Rated K for Kubrick and King: A Love Story (AKA DR. SLEEP AND THE SHINING)
On this double feature episode, we're covering DR. SLEEP: an adaptation of a sequel of an adaptation of Stephen King's most beloved novel, THE SHINING. These two stories span decades to cover Dan Torrance's story.
After drying out for the sake of his family, recovering alcoholic writer Jack Torrance takes a caretaker position and brings his family to spend a lonely winter stranded by snow. While his wife Wendy hopes this is a new opportunity for the family to heal and Jack sees it as a way to pursue his writing career, their son Danny has been warned by his mysterious friend Tony that the Overlook is not a safe place for the struggling family. What secrets the hotel holds could cost the Torrance family their sanity and their lives.
Twenty years after the traumatic events at the Overlook Hotel and the dismantling of his father's sanity and his mother's happiness, Dan Torrance hides his "shine" by diving into alcohol abuse. But when he discovers the power he has to help dying patients pass on, he joins AA, gets sober, and finds fulfilling work at a hospice care facility.
Not too far away, Abra, a girl with a gift even greater than Dan's shines bright enough to catch the attention of a terrifying group of quasi-immortals who feed off the "steam" of those who shine. Led by the charismatic Rose the Hat, the True Knot sets their sights on the power Abra holds and only Dan can help her use her shine to defeat this group of pure evil beings.
